A good poet uses language very carefully; as a good reader you in turn must be equally sensitive to the implications of word choice. While poems are not typically thought of as arguments, the Renaissance tradition demanded rigorous logic and quality of thought rather than simple sentimentality—even when writing about love.
One way to approach a text may be to start with the beginning of the novel, story, play, or poem, and work your way toward its end. Is there a pattern of any sort to the metaphors? Allusions are frequently references made to other texts for example, to the Bible, or to another poem.
If you are comparing and contrasting two texts, you might work thematically or by addressing first one text and then the other. The poem tells about a woman, in inexplicit language, who is haunted by a past mistake and how, through this mistake, the image which constantly recounts her actions engraved in her soul, a never-ending guilt as well as a will to be forgiven.
What should you expect from such a poem? Does a particular sound or sounds dominate the poem? It is not even after reading the poem twice that one could understand what it is trying to say.
Try to see why the poet chose a particular metaphor as opposed to other possible ones. Do the rhyming words have any relationship with each other? Lines It is a direct reference to the theme of motherhood. Are different states of being, or different ways of thinking, associated with different times?
Or is your work clearer when you work through each big idea—the significance of whiteness, the effect of an altered sonnet form, and so on—sequentially?
Look for groups of similar words. Punctuation can create or reinforce rhythm. The poem is about her book Tenth Muse: After thinking about local questions, we have to zoom out.
